U.S. St. Stephen's Land Office - military land warrant records, 1853-1858.

Prior to the Civil War U. S. veterans were often rewarded for their service with warrants entitling them to free U.S. land. These records contain a chronological list of warrants redeemed at the St. Stephen's Land Office. Each entry contains the number of the warrant, the name of the veteran, the date the warrant was received at the land office and the location of the land. Some entries also contain notes and remarks. The records document the system of military land warrants and the settlement of the region and are useful for genealogical research.
